| Iowa Representative Steve King |
Representative Steve King was asked about the number of White speakers at the Republican Convention. Representative King wanted to defend the selection of so many White people and said:
In response, Mr. King said: “This whole ‘old white people’ business does get a little tired, Charlie. I’d ask you to go back through history and figure out where are these contributions that have been made by these other categories of people that you are talking about? Where did any other subgroup of people contribute more to civilization?”
“Than white people?” Mr. Hayes asked.
Mr. King responded: “Than Western civilization itself that’s rooted in Western Europe, Eastern Europe and the United States of America, and every place where the footprint of Christianity settled the world. That’s all of Western civilization.”
Wow, this is such an antiquated view of American history. Representative King needs to brush up on his history and figure out who created some of the first civilizations on this continent. Who farmed the tobacco that was the first crop to make huge money in trade? Whose work created the wealth that allowed White people to benefit. Yes, White people have done many great things, but Representative King's comments are so offensive. Representative King has the same ethnocentric mindset that Columbus had when he hit the shores of North America.
Sad.
